Dancing is a means of expression and ranges from tribal and folk dance to ballet, modern, formal and popular dance. Tribal dances accompanied by drums beats and chants have been performed from the very earliest times in all parts of the world. Ballet which is performed by professional dancers and accompanied by an orchestra, can still express the same feeling as other dances, though it is also a means of telling a story and is performed on stage in a theatre.

Dancing origins are linked with ancient religious rites and rituals that were believed to protect people against natural disasters. Tribal dances today still reflect these concerns and are also used to celebrate the French minuet were danced on formal occasions. The Waltz is still popular. The dervishes of the Middle East perform religious dances for hours, and some Chinese dances were intended to drive away evil spirits or bad weather. People around the world dance to express their feelings.
